First Day with my 7th Graders


Let’s see what updates I have for this month. I just finished my 3 week break from teaching which was great! The first week I relaxed and bed rotted, the second week my family was in town, and the third week we went to charlotte. I just started going back to school for my teacher work days before school starts and I am so ready to start back up again. Meeting some of the 7th graders I’ll have showed me just how young they are! They looked like babies today. Hopefully they stay this sweet and innocent for me next week. I also just scheduled the volleyball tryouts for next month. I can’t believe i’m also going to be coaching so soon! So many exciting teaching days coming up!

Just finished my first day of teaching today! I was super nervous about the kids being insane because my first period was kind of loud (usually the morning class is the quietest). But the rest of my classes were just a dream, so my first class being the worst was such a good surprise! My feet are dying and I haven't eaten all day, but besides that it was such a good day! I also started talking to a few girls about volleyball and I hope they're actually decent so I can get them on my team! I am just so happy to be back at work and starting fresh, unlike last year. I also love my new classroom so much more. This one is way bigger and actually lets people move around as needed. Also, even though these classes are bigger, like almost 40 kids in each one, they have been way more receptive to instruction and discipline compared to the 8th graders. We'll see if this is just them putting on their good behavior for the first day, but I'm hopeful. I'm already getting too emotionally attached to these kids and I just met them. Also, I didn't have to confiscate any phones today! That's a big win for me. Phones were my biggest issue last year, so I feel like a better teacher now haha. 

So many thoughts and so many feelings! I am really glad I chose teaching as my career. I didn't think I wanted to be one until halfway through university, and I'm so glad I made this decision. I truly feel made for this job and am so excited to see how I develop as an educator. Also, I don't know why so many people's reactions to me telling them I'm a teacher is, "OMG I could never do that, good for you though!" Because I very much like it. Anyways! Enough of the rambling, today was a good day for Mrs. Vickers.

We Graduated!

We graduated! It was so much fun having everyone in town to help us move and celebrate! We ended up being able to move out of our apartment a day earlier than planned which ended up being so nice. We had a 33 hour drive ahead of us in our u-haul going from Idaho to North Carolina. We were told that since the u-haul was pulling our car, we would only be able to drive 55 mph tops! Our original plan was to split this up into 3 very long driving days (9 hours, 15 hours, and 15 hours with accounting for our driving speed and stops).  The first day we drove to see Clayton’s grandparents which was nice! I’d never been to their house before so I got a chance to look through all of her old photos from Clayton’s side of the family. Once we left their house in the morning, we never stopped driving. We ended up being able to go 90 mph in the u-haul and we kept trading off driving and napping. Teaching Updates!

If you've been keeping up with my blog posts, you already know that I have finished up my first month of teaching! (Today is my last teacher workday). As much as I am going to miss my 8th graders, most of them anyway, I am so excited to be teaching 7th grade next year! I have started moving my stuff over to my new classroom and I am just so excited. My new room is bigger because it used to be a science room, so I keep thinking of millions of ideas of what to do with the space. I didn't decorate my first room because I had a feeling I would be switching classrooms so it never felt homey to me. I am determined to make my next classroom feel like mine without spending all my money on it haha. I think that the atmosphere of a classroom makes more of a difference than people think, so I am prioritizing it.  I have also started mingling with the 7th grade teachers, specifically the ELA department.
